4 Veggies to Kick-start Your Healthy Habits in 2020

Can you believe it’s almost 2020? Not only are we entering a new year, but also a new decade.

With the holiday season in full swing, it can be hard to find time to think about the year ahead. If we want to hit the ground running and tackle those New Year’s resolutions, start planning your garden now.

From eating better to exercising more, many of us use the new year as an opportunity to foster healthier habits. Fortunately, Tower Garden makes it effortless to plant, grow, and harvest fresh and healthy greens in a matter of weeks.

By taking the time to plan out your garden, you’ll be able to get a head start on clean eating to support your 2020 goals. Here are some of our favorite healthy cool weather greens to grow with Tower Garden at the start of each year.

Kale

High in nutrients, flavor and fiber, this super green is as versatile as it is healthy. Eat it raw in a salad, sauté it as a side for dinner, or bake it in the oven to create a nutritious on-the-go snack. Not only that, but it’s one of the fastest growing Tower Garden crops there is.

Offering more vitamin C than an orange, more calcium than milk, and more potassium than a banana, Kale should be a staple of any New Year’s diet. There are also a variety of different types of Kale to try out in your Tower Garden — curly kale, Lacinato kale and red Russian kale.

Lettuce

From salads to sandwiches, lettuce is often the first food that we think of when it comes to eating healthy. While the lettuce from the produce section of most supermarkets can be hit or miss, there’s nothing like the refreshing crunch of this homegrown green.

Offering vitamins A, K, and a variety of other nutrients, lettuce has consistently been one of Tower Garden’s most popular crops. Fast growing, this green will be ready for harvest in as few as three weeks.

Spinach

A staple of salads, stir-fries, and smoothies, spinach is the ultimate green to support your healthy habits in the new year. Not only is it versatile and tasty, it’s one of the healthiest greens you can grow with your Tower Garden — as it contains iron, vitamins A and C, and plenty of other important nutrients.

Ready for harvest in just about a month, growing this superfood now will ensure your crops can be harvested soon into the new year.

Swiss Chard

Durable enough to withstand all seasons, indoors or outside, this nutrient-dense, delicious green doesn’t get nearly the attention it deserves. Packed with vitamins A, B, C, K, heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, copper, iron, manganese, phosphorus, and potassium, Swiss chard is among the healthiest foods you can eat.

Considered a cool season crop, Swiss chard has an optimal growing temperature of 50-70 degrees F. This crop is perfect for folks who live in slightly warmer climates during the winter months or who can keep their Tower Garden indoors during the winter. Throw it in a salad, sauté it as a side, or enjoy it in your soup to keep you nice and warm.
